College Profile:
St. Mary's College, S.Bathery is owned and managed by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East. It was a long cherished dream of His Holiness the Catholicos, Moran Mar Baselios Augen Ist to start a centre of learning among the adivasis and rural folks of Wayanad. It was fulfilled when late Rev. Fr. Mathai Nooranal and late Sri. M.C Pothan Manamel volunteered to explore the possibilities of starting a college and formed an Ad hoc Committee on 12th November 1964 with the former as the Chairman and the latter as the Secretary. The college was formally opened on 1st July 1965 by the late Rev. Fr. Mathai Nooranal, the founder Chairman of the Governing Board at a meeting presided over by late Sri. M.C.Pothan, Founder Secretary of the Governing Board. Rev. Fr. Mathai Nooranal was the secretary of the governing Board till his demise on 29th November 2002. Sri.M.C Pothen was Treasurer till 1993. Sri. Jacob Mathew, Director and Executive Editor, Malayala Manorama Kottayam, is the Treasurer since 1993. H.G. Thomas Mar Themothios, the Metropolitan of the Malabar Diocese was the president of the Governing Board from 1967 to 1991. His Grace Kuriakose Mar Clemis, Metropolitian of the Sulthan Bathery Diocese is the Manager and President of the College Governing Board since 1991. In 1968 the University of Calicut came into existence and ipso facto the college stands affiliated to the University of Calicut since then. The college was upgraded as a post graduate institution in the year 1984.The College is located in a very healthy campus of about fifty acres of land blessed with natural beauty and bio-diversity surrounded by plantations of coffee and pepper, paddy fields and gentile hills. It nestles in the midst of the hill ranges of the Western Ghats, Nagarhole National Park, Bandipur National Park and Muthumala National Park and Wayanad Wild Life Sanctuary. The campus is serene and peaceful at an elevation about 3000 ft above the sea level away from the maddening crowd. The environment is totally conducive for studies and all round development of students. The rainfall is about 250cms per year. The temperature is between 15o c to 30o c. The college is situated at Sulthan Bathery formerly the battery of Tipu Sulthan., 2Km. away from NH212 taking the deviation uphill. It is 110 Km. to Mysore, 100 Km. to Kozhikode and 98 Km to Oottacamund
